NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State softball team could not bounce back after a big third inning by Lipscomb, falling to the Bisons 7-1 Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season.
How it happened: After a scoreless three innings in which the Owls (26-27, 10-11) logged only two walks and a single by
Christen Florence, the Bisons (35-13-1, 13-4) pulled in front in the bottom of the third.
Lipscomb's Graysen Gladden reached on a bunt single, advancing to third on two errant pitches. After a walk, Sarah Higgins hit a three-run home run to give Lipscomb a 3-0 lead. The Bisons added to their lead with back-to-back walks followed by a bases clearing double from Khayla Green to earn a 5-0 lead before KSU could close out the inning.
Lipscomb added to its lead in the following inning as
Peyton Elzey replaced
Hailey Andrews on the mound. The Bisons eventually loaded the bases, scoring two runs off an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to push their lead to 7-0.
The Owls prevented the shutout in the top of the seventh as
Lexi Solorzano smashed a double to deep left center field.
Brea Dickey then legged out a bunt single, advancing all the way to third on a throwing error, to score Solorzano and put KSU on the board 7-1. That would be all the Owls would muster, though, as the next two batters struck out to end the game.
Notes: Christen Florence,
Lexi Solorzano and
Brea Dickey logged the only hits for the Owls, with Solorzano finishing 1-for-1 with a double and a run scored while Florence and Dickey each finished 1-for-3 …
Hannah Thomason finished 0-for-1 after drawing two walks on the day while recording one swiped bag …
Hailey Andrews recorded the loss, going three innings and recording two strikeouts …
Peyton Elzey recorded three innings on the mound, tossing one strikeout.
Up next: Despite being swept, the Owls still clinched their spot in the ASUN Tournament. With still one weekend left to play for the rest of the teams in the conference, KSU will have to wait to see where it will fall in the standings with the tournament set to begin Wednesday, May 8.
