STATESBORO, Ga. – A trio of home runs and a seventh inning RBI double from
Kira Czyrklis helped push the Owls to a 5-4 victory in a back-and-forth game against Georgia Southern Wednesday evening.
How it happened: The Owls (26-24) got rolling right off the bat as
Brea Dickey hit a lead-off single before stealing second.
Maddie Roth then stepped up and cleared the bases with a shot over the left field wall to give KSU a 2-0 lead. Georgia Southern (19-25) answered in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run of its own to knot the game back up.
KSU attempted to take the lead back the following inning as
Jade Lee notched a lead-off single, eventually being pushed to third base, but the Owls failed to plate her. The Eagles seized the opportunity in the bottom of the inning as Macy Coleman struck an RBI double following a lead-off walk to take a 3-2 lead.
Roth put the teams back on level terms in the third inning, smashing a solo home run in her second plate appearance.
Taylor Cates got into the action in the top of the fourth with a solo home run of her own to put KSU back in front 4-3.
The Eagles tied it up again in the bottom of the fifth following a lead-off triple from Mekhia Freeman. She would come in to score following a wild pitch during the next at-bat, but the Owls kept the damage to one run, heading into the sixth tied 4-4.
After a scoreless inning,
Christen Florence broke things open in the seventh with a lead-off triple.
Kira Czyrklis brought her home with an RBI double to put the Owls in front 5-4 heading into the bottom of the inning. After entering in the bottom of the sixth,
Hailey Andrews took the mound to close it out, striking out the side to record the win.
