Owls Drop Game One Against FGCU 8-3

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Owls fell 8-3 inside Stillwell Stadium on Friday evening to Florida Gulf Coast.

The Owls immediately responded after the Eagles put the first run of the ballgame in the books in the opening frame.

In the bottom of the first inning with Jake Franklin aboard, Garrett Hodges poked a single to left field to tie the game at one run a piece.

Kennesaw State struggled to get in a groove offensively, and could not score any runs until the eighth inning. FGCU plated one run in the second, two in the fourth frame, and added one more in the sixth inning to push the lead to 5-1.

KSU had chances throughout the contest, collecting 10 hits throughout the ballgame. The Owls stranded a runner in third, fifth, sixth and seventh before putting up two runs in the eighth inning.

The Owls manufactured runs with two outs in the eighth inning, plating both with no margin of error. With Hodges and Norman on base, Tyler Simon ripped a single to left field to bring home Norman. After a pitching change, Justin Russell singled to right field to plate Hodges and bring the Owls to within two, 5-3.

Perhaps the highlight of the night came in the top of the ninth inning when Norman sprinted from right field to foul territory to slide on his back and make the grab for the first out of the inning. It was overshadowed by three runs from FGCU to push the lead to 8-3.

The Owls scored in the ninth inning off a balk from the FGCU hurler to cut the lead to 8-4.

Brooks Buckler started on the mound for the Owls and tossed 7.0 innings, striking out four and surrendering five runs. Brison Finney was effective out of the bullpen for the Owls tonight, after striking out the side in the eighth inning. He finished with 1.1 innings of no-hit baseball while punching out a trio of batters.

The Owls are back on the diamond for a double-header tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m.
