KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team used different formulas to create a pair of victories during the second day of the Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament Saturday at Bailey Park.
Behind the continued strong pitching of senior
Hailey Andrews and a late-inning comeback, the Owls (13-11) rallied to post a 2-1 victory over Western Kentucky before collecting 11 hits in a 10-4 win over Saint Louis.
After falling behind 1-0 in the seventh inning, Kennesaw State produced a two-out rally to post the win, and combined with its victory over Saint Louis, extended its winning streak to a season-high eight games.
KSU continued a trend of receiving contributions throughout its lineup as six different players had multiple hits on the day. In the circle, freshman
Peyton Elzey (2-2) came on in relief in the first inning after Saint Louis had scored three runs and pitched effectively, working 6 2/3 innings to even her record.
Western Kentucky Recap
Andrews and the Hilltoppers' Kennedy Sullivan hooked up in a pitchers' duel as they held the opponent scoreless over six innings before Western Kentucky struck first on a home run by Kelsey McGuffin to open the top of the seventh. The home run by the Hilltoppers snapped a streak of 32 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings by Andrews (7-6).
Kira Czyrklis opened the bottom half of the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Olivia Gocke. Down to their last out,
Faith Alexander reached on an infield single to plate Czyrklis with the tying run.
Hannah Thomason followed with a single and
Maddie Roth ended the game with a double to center field to drive home Alexander with the winning run.
Andrews continued her strong work in the circle, pitching seven innings, allowing five hits, one run, walking three and striking out 10.
