KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team fell behind early and was never able to fully mount a comeback as it fell 5-2 to Florida Gulf Coast in the finale of a weekend series Sunday at Bailey Park.
Â
In a re-match of Saturday's series opener, starting pitchers
Hailey Andrews and Riley Randolph matched-up against one another. After each allowed a first inning run, FGCU (17-12, 3-0) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Owls (17-17, 2-4) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run by
Jessie Mullen, her second of the series, to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Â
The Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 5-2.
Â
Kennesaw State created scoring chances in the third and fifth innings, but were unable to produce the big hit. The Owls had two runners on base in scoring position with one out in the third and, after Mullen's fifth-inning leadoff home run, put two aboard, but left them stranded.
Â
Mullen had two of the Owls' six hits, while Andrews (9-9) allowed five runs, five hits, walked two and struck out eight in seven innings.
Â
Kennesaw State returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Alabama to face Auburn in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. (ET).
