KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team lost both ends of doubleheader to visiting Florida Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park.
Â
The Owls (17-16, 2-3) suffered a tough 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Eagles (16-12, 2-0) in game one before suffering a 5-2 setback in game two.
Â
SeniorÂ
Hailey Andrews and FGCU's Riley Randolph hooked up in a pitchers' duel, pitching all nine innings in game one. After allowing three runs in the first two innings, Andrews (9-8) pitched six shutout innings before allowing a two-out run-scoring double in the ninth that allowed the Eagles to take a 4-3 lead.
Â
The loss overshadowed a career-high 13 strikeouts by Andrews, who scattered seven hits and walked two.
Â
Trailing 3-0, Kennesaw State scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the score. The Owls had an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the seventh afterÂ
Hannah Thomason opened the inning with a double.
Â
It appeared as though KSU would complete a come-from-behind victory whenÂ
Maddie Roth hit a line drive into right-centerfield. However, the ball was caught in the gap and the Owls were unable to produce the clutch hit.
Â
Kennesaw State trailed the entire game in the nightcap as FGCU scored two runs in the first inning. The Owls cut the deficit in half with a run in the second before both teams scored in the sixth inning. The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Â
JuniorÂ
Hannah Thomason and freshmanÂ
Katie Greep led Kennesaw State offensively, with each play collecting three hits. Greep also scored a run and had an RBI.
Jessie Mullen homered in game one for the Owls.
Â
The two teams conclude the ASUN Conference series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday at Bailey Park.
