KENNESAW, Ga. – Strong starting pitching and defense combined with the home run ball proved a winning combination as the Kennesaw State softball swept Western Carolina in a doubleheader Saturday during day two of the I-75 Challenge at Bailey Park.

Senior Hailey Andrews established a career-high in strikeouts and junior Abby Deane pitched a complete game, while freshman Katie Greep, sophomore Joirea Dumas and junior Jade Lee all connected for their first career home runs in helping the Owls (8-11) to 7-1 and 10-2 victories.

Senior Maddie Roth also had a big day as she went 5-for-7 with three runs scored and an RBI. Lee had three hits, scored three runs and collected four RBIs.

Game 1
Andrews (4-6) turned the best performance of her Owl career as she worked seven scoreless innings, allowed three hits, walked two and struck out a personal-best 11 batters. She also turned in the rare feat of earning a victory and save in the same game as she re-entered the in the seventh inning with the bases loaded, no outs and the tying run on deck. Andrews retired all three batters without allowing a run to score.

Greep had the big blow of the game as she highlighted a 2-for-3 day with a three-run home run during a four-run third inning. Roth went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Game 2
Junior Olivia Gocke had two hits and drove in three runs, Roth collected two hits, and Dumas and Lee homered to headline a 10-hit attack. Lee broke the game open with a three-run homer in the second inning and Dumas produced a pinch-hit two-run home run in the fourth inning. All nine players in the starting lineup reached base and eight of nine hit safely.

Deane (4-3) earned the victory after pitching five innings, allowing three hits, walking four and striking out two to register her third complete game of the season.

Sunday's Game Cancelled
Sunday's weekend finale versus Fordham was cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather.
