ATHENS, Ga. – Kennesaw State (4-3) fell to No. 9 Georgia (7-1) 11-1 on Wednesday (Feb. 27) evening at Foley Field.
The Owls had opportunities to score, but had a hard time converting base runners into runs and left seven runners on base.
Both pitchers turned in solid first innings after each recorded three-straight outs to begin the game. With one out in the second inning,
Jake Franklin roped a ball into right-center field, but was picked off and the Owls finished the inning scoreless.
After a scoreless second frame and with one out in the third inning,
Daniel Seres drew a one out walk and was pushed the second after a single to right field from
David Chabut. With the hit, Chabut extended his hitting streak to four games. After Georgia issued back-to-back walks, the bases were loaded but all three Owls were stranded in the third frame.
The Bulldogs plated their first run of the game after Rothwell issued a walk with the bases loaded, but the Owls limited the damage to just one more run and found themselves down 2-0 after three.
The Owls found themselves in scoring position in the fourth inning after
Jaylen Smith drew a lead-off walk and was sent to third after Franklin sent a screamer into right field. With runners on first and third and no outs, UGA recorded a double play and the Owls stranded Smith at third base.
UGA took advantage of two errors committed by the Owls in the fifth inning to score a run and claim a 3-0 lead.
Kennesaw State found its first to runners aboard in the sixth inning but could not capitalize and headed to the bottom of the frame down 3-0.
Jake Rothwell's day finished after the fifth inning when
Luke Torbert came onto the mound for his second appearance of the season.
KSU pitchers struggled to find the strike zone in the sixth inning and issued three walks. Georgia combined the free bases, a balk and two errors with two hits to plate three in the inning.
UGA tacked on 5 runs in the eighth inning, KSU scored on a Bulldog error in the ninth and the Owls fell 11-1.
Franklin ended as the only Owl to record more than one hit, with
Alex Carballo, Smith,
Garrett Hodges and Chabut all logging one.
