Lewis Nets Career-High As Owls Fall To Liberty

Box Score (PDF) | Box Score (HTML)

LYNCHBURG, Va. –
Despite a career-high 27 points from Danny Lewis, the Kennesaw State men's basketball team fell to league-leaders Liberty Tuesday night as the Flames shot over 62 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away and down KSU 76-59.

How it happened: After five points from Lewis put the Owls (5-25, 2-13) in front early, the Flames (24-6, 13-2) responded with three-straight three-pointers to open a 14-2 run, capped off by another trey, to lead 17-7 at the 14:32 mark. The two teams traded buckets until three points the hard way from Kyle Clarke sparked a 10-2 run to pull KSU within four, 24-20, with 7:33 left in the half.

Following another three from Lewis, who went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc for 13 points in the first half, the Owls and Flames proceeded to go point-for-point to close out the period. KSU shot over 40 percent for most of the half, winning the battle on the boards 20-13, to keep it close, trailing 33-29 at the break.

Liberty came out in the second half with a purpose, sinking back-to-back three-pointers for a 10-0 run to lead 43-29. The Flames started the second half 6-of-6 from the floor to push their lead to 47-31 at the 15:23 mark.

After a 6-0 run, the Owls went nearly five-minutes without a bucket as Liberty extended its lead to 58-38 behind an 11-0 run. Lewis finally ended the drought with his fifth trey of the night.

The Flames kept a 20-point lead the rest of the game, answering each Owl bucket. KSU closed out the game with an 8-2 run capped off by a three-pointer from Kosta Jankovic to earn the final score.

Notes: Danny Lewis became the fourth Owl this year to sink six three-pointers in a single-game, going 6-of-13 from beyond the arc … Lewis has now hit double-figures in nine of the last 10 games … The Owls finished the game 7-of-20 from three-point range, marking the eighth time in the last nine games KSU has sank at least four three-pointers … KSU tied its season-low from the free throw line, shooting 50 percent for the game … Tyler Hooker snapped his 27 game streak of 10 or more points, scoring eight against the Flames to mark only the second time this year he has failed to hit double-figures … Kyle Clarke finished with nine points.

Up next: The Owls close out the regular season Friday night, hosting Stetson for senior night and a spot in the ASUN Tournament at 7 p.m.
