JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Despite 29 points from
Kamiyah Street and a double-double from
Carlotta Gianolla, the Owls fell to UNF 74-66 on Tuesday (Feb. 12).
Both teams were evenly matched in the early part of the contest inside UNF Arena. Knotted at eight points,
Carlotta Gianolla made a jumper to give the Owls the 10-8 advantage. The Owls took a 16-12 advantage after
Alexis Poole netted a turnaround jump shot with less than a second left in the quarter. Poole ended the quarter with six points and five rebounds.
The Ospreys came out of the first quarter break hot and took a 17-16 lead with just over eight minutes in the second frame. Kennesaw State answered with a 9-0 run in the middle of the quarter to capture a 25-19 advantage. Street aided the run with a jumper and trifecta while
Lexi Mann netted a basket.
The lead expanded to 30-19 after
Breanna Hoover swished a corner 3-pointer which gave the Owls their largest lead of the game. KSU went into halftime up 30-23 with Street recording 11 points. The Owls' defense was stifling in the first half, holding North Florida to just 18.4 percent shooting.
Each team went back-and-forth to begin the third quarter as the lead was still a seven-point Owl lead six minutes into the quarter. The Ospreys found themselves down just five points with 33 seconds to go in the third quarter, but Hoover converted a 3-point play to give the Owls an eight-point lead before two UNF free throws to make it 49-43 heading into the final frame.
North Florida opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 to tie the game at 49 at the 8:13 mark. UNF scored the next four points to take a 53-49 advantage before
Iceis Walker knocked down a free throw to stop the run. Finding her team down by six points, Street nailed a 3-pointer to make it 56-53 with just over four minutes in the game. Kennesaw State got within two, but could not overcome the deficient and fell, 74-66.
