Quick Hits
» The Kennesaw State volleyball team closes out its home slate for the 2019 season this Friday, hosting league-leading FGCU in its final match at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The Owls will then open their final stretch of the regular season on the road at Stetson Sunday afternoon.
» KSU will look to close out the year strong and maintain its top-two spot in the ASUN standings, facing three of the top-five teams in the league over its final four matches. The Owls have already clinched a spot in the ASUN Conference Tournament following Stetson's victory over Jacksonville last week. Kennesaw State has now reached the conference tournament five years in a row with hopes of reaching the championship for the third straight season.
» Junior
Lauren Chastang reached a major milestone this past weekend, earning her 1,000th career point. Only six players in program history have earned over 1,000 career points. Chastang is one of four players in the ASUN to register over 300 kills this season (343) and is ranked third in the league averaging 3.81 kills per set. She also ranks 12th in the conference for total digs (241), one of only three players in the ASUN to record over 250 kills and 200 digs this season.
» After logging a team-high .250 hitting percentage against Lipscomb,
Quin Sutphin remained one of the top hitters in the league ranked third in the ASUN with a .348 hitting percentage. Sutphin has hit .300 or better in 14 matches this year, .400 or better in 10. If maintained, that hitting percentage would set a new KSU single-season record.
» Lexi Broadwater is one of the top setters in the country, ranked second in the NCAA with an 11.67 assists per set average. With 1,051 total assists on the year, Broadwater joined Sara Metroka as the only two Owls to record 1,000 assists in multiple seasons. If she maintains her current assists per set average, it would break the single-season record she set last season. She is the only Owl in history to average over 11 assists per set in a season and is on track to reach that feat for a second time.
Killing the Game
KSU is the top attacking team in the ASUN, averaging 13.99 kills per set to lead the league and rank 23rd in the NCAA. The Owls' .241 hitting percentage currently ranks second in the conference.
If that average is maintained, it would set a new single-season record and mark the third straight season, third time in program history, KSU has averaged over 13 kills per set in a season.
So far this year, KSU has recorded over 60 kills in seven matches, three with over 70. The Owls 76 kills against Furman was just three shy of the single-match record.
Lauren Chastang and
Quin Sutphin both rank in the ASUN's top-10 for kills per set with Chastang ranked third averaging 3.81 followed by Sutphin in seventh with a 3.14 average. The Owls are one of two teams, including North Florida, to have two players averaging over three kills per set.
Ace in the Hole
KSU has dominated from the service line, averaging 1.99 aces per set to lead the ASUN and rank fifth in the nation.
KSU's 179 total aces has already surpassed the single-season record KSU set last year. The Owls have recorded double-digit aces in six matches this year.
The Owls have set and tied the single-match record with 14 aces against Furman and North Alabama. The Owls' 14 against UNA also marked the most aces all-time in a four-set match.
Lauren Chastang has been a huge factor in KSU's success at the service line, recording three or more aces in eight matches this year. After tying her career-high with six against UNA, she set a new single-season record with 52 aces so far this year. She leads the ASUN and ranks fifth in the NCAA for aces per set (0.58), fourth for total aces.
Including Chastang, six Owls have logged at least 10 aces on the year,
Karlee Groover,
Bri Becerra,
Lexi Broadwater,
Shelby Dennis and
Jessie Cohen.
Bri Becerra set the KSU record for aces in a three-set match with six at UNA. That performance vaulted her to ninth in the ASUN with 27 aces.
Karlee Groover (5th) also ranks among the league's top-10 for total aces with 33 on the year. Groover's 0.37 aces per set average comes in at fourth in the ASUN.Â
We Can Dig It
The Owls currently rank third in the league with a 14.79 digs per set average.
Five Owls have hit the century mark for digs with
Karlee Groover recording her 400th dig in KSU's recent match against NJIT. Groover has logged double-digit digs in all but two matches this year and is currently ranked fifth in the conference for both total digs (413) and digs per set (4.58).
The Newnan, Ga., native has totaled 20 or more digs in seven matches this year, tying her career-high with 32 against Liberty. With 1,084 digs in her career, Groover is just the fourth Owl in program history to record over 1,000 career digs.
Her 413 digs on the year ranks eighth on the KSU single-season record list. Groover joins
Katarina Morton and Camille Pedraza as one of three Owls to record over 400 digs in multiple seasons, having recorded 510 last year.
Set Up For SuccessÂ
Lexi Broadwater set a new standard for setters in 2018, and this year she is on track to raise that bar even more. Broadwater has jumped into first in the ASUN and second in the NCAA with an 11.67 assists per set average.
With 59 assists at UNF, Broadwater has now recorded over 50 assists in seven matches this year, 40 or more in 15.
She is one of only four players in the country to average over 11.5 assists per set. If she maintains her current assists per set average, it would break the single-season record she set last season.
She recently broke 1,000 assists on the year, marking just the sixth time in program history an Owl has recorded over 1,000 assists in a season. Only Sara Metroka (2011, 2012, 2013) has recorded over 1,000 assists in multiple seasons.
With 2,492 assists in her career, Broadwater is one of three players in program history to record over 2,000 career assists. Currently averaging 10.7 assists per set for her career, if maintained, she would set a new program career record.
QUINtessentially dominant
Quin Sutphin recorded her 10th match this season hitting over .400 against NJIT. She is just one of nine players in the league to hit over .300 on the season, ranked third with a .348 hitting percentage.
If she maintains her current hitting percentage, she would set a new single-season record.
The Film Room
FGCU has dominated the ASUN this year with their only loss coming in its conference-opener at Liberty. The Eagles have lost only five sets in league play, three to Liberty and one each to Stetson and KSU.
FGCU is second in the league in both kills and digs per set. The Eagles have the league-leaders in both kills per set and digs per set in Cortney VanLiew (4.13) and Dana Axner (5.30).
Stetson has been on a tear as of late with their recent loss to FGCU snapping an eight-match winning streak. The Hatters lead the league averaging 17.34 digs per set in ASUN play.
Stetson has two players ranked in the league's top-10 for kills in Eva Deisa (8th) and Elena Djokovic (10th), recording 250 and 246 kills, respectively.Â
Looking Ahead
Following Sunday's match, the Owls close out the regular season on the road at Jacksonville Friday (Nov. 15) followed by Liberty Sunday (Nov. 17).
