TOP STORYLINES
» The Kennesaw State men's basketball team returns to the court following the Thanksgiving holiday with two games in the Tar Heel State. The Owls look to earn their first win of the season, squaring off against Elon Monday to cap off the home-and-home series from last year followed by the first ever meeting with UNC Greensboro Wednesday.
» Freshman
Armani Harris is coming off a tremendous game against Iona, nearly recording the Owls' first double-double of the year with 10 points and nine rebounds. Harris currently leads the team and ranks seventh in the ASUN averaging seven rebounds per game.
»
Antonio Spencer,
Terrell Burden and
C.J. Washington had career nights against Iona as Washington led the team with 12 points, his first career double-digit game. Spencer netted career-highs for both points (7) and rebounds (9) against the Gaels while Burden led the way with seven assists.
» The freshmen have stepped up in the early part of the season with
Terrell Burden,
Armani Harris and
Bobby Miller having big impacts. Burden leads the squad with 10 assists while third on the team for scoring, averaging eight points per game. Harris is currently averaging 7.8 points per game and leads the team with 35 boards. Walk-on freshman Miller had a coming out party at Mercer with six points, six rebounds and two assists. He earned his first career start in KSU's last outing against Iona.
» After finishing the 2018-19 season second on the team with 27 total blocks,
Antonio Spencer has stepped his game up with five blocks on the year so far. That mark is good enough for ninth in the ASUN.
» The Owls will be tested early and often with seven NCAA Tournament teams on the schedule, including four who made it to the second round of play. The 2019-20 slate also includes nine teams who finished last year in the top-100 RPI, six in the top-50, as well as 10 teams who won 20 or more games.
KEEPING IT 'MELO'
Freshman Armani 'Melo' Harris has been a major burst of energy off the bench for KSU in the early portion of the season. He currently averages 7.8 points and seven rebounds per game to rank among the team's top performers.
So far this year he has scored at least five points in every appearance except the season-opener at Creighton. The Covington, Ga., native nearly earned KSU's first double-double of the year with 10 points and nine rebounds against Iona, both career-high marks.
He currently ranks seventh in the ASUN for rebounds per game while ranked third on the team with six assists. Harris is currently shooting a team-high 56 percent from the floor. Â
HOOK, LINE AND SINKER
Tyler Hooker had his double-digit scoring streak snapped last weekend at the ASUN/MAAC Challenge after being held scoreless against Iona. Despite that, the redshirt senior still leads the team averaging 8.6 points per game.
Hooker finished last season second in the ASUN averaging 19 points per game.
One of the Owls most formidable free throw shooters, he currently ranks third in the ASUN, shooting 88.9 percent from the charity stripe.
The Simpsonville, S.C., product reached 1,000 career points scored last season and needs just 140 more points this year to crack the KSU career top-10.Â
UP-AND-COMING
The 2019-20 men's basketball roster is one of the youngest in recent history with 10 of 16 players either freshmen or sophomores. Of KSU's six upperclassmen, only Tyler Hooker and Bryson Lockley have played major minutes heading into the year.Â
Two of the Owls' most highly touted recruits, Armani Harris and Terrell Burden, enter the collegiate level coming off major prep careers and have already had a big impact, averaging over 20 minutes per game so far this season.Â
Harris and Burden have each scored double-digits in two games this year.
Burden and the Owls' final true freshman, Bobby Miller, have each earned one start over the first five games of the season.
Miller saw serious minutes at Mercer, recording six points, six rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes of action, all current highs for the Buford, Ga., native.Â
SETTING THE TONE
Redshirt Sophomore Antonio "Tone" Spencer earned his first career start in the Owls' season-opener at Creighton and has started in each game since.Â
The Dallas, Texas native continues to improve his game this year with a career-high seven points and nine rebounds in KSU's last game against Iona.
He leads the team with five blocks on the year after tying his career-high with three at Drake.
Spencer currently ranks 10th in the ASUN averaging 6.6 rebounds per game while tied for ninth with five total blocks. He'll look to continue to elevate his game after ranking second on the team and eighth in the ASUN with 27 total blocks last year.
Spencer has seen a lot more minutes already this year, averaging 23.4 minutes per game. Last season he recorded over 20 minutes only four times in 32 appearances, averaging 13.4 minutes per game in 2018-19.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following their trip through North Carolina, the Owls return to the Convocation Center for a two-game homestand, hosting FIU Saturday (Dec. 7) and Gardner-Webb the following Friday (Dec. 13).
