Quick Hits
» The Kennesaw State volleyball team will shine the spotlight on its two seniors,
Lexi Broadwater and
Madeline Johnson, as well as a host of returning alumni Saturday night as the Owls take on Lipscomb for Senior Day at 7 p.m. The Bisons are looking to bounce back after dropping their last two matches, currently sitting in fourth place in the ASUN standings.
» The Owls have been on fire as of late, hitting over .400 in two of the last three matches. Both hitting percentages (.446 and .410) ranked in the top-10 single-match performances in program history. This season, the Owls are hitting .247 as a team to rank second in the conference. Middle Blocker
Quin Sutphin has been a driving force for the Owls, hitting over .400 in 10 matches this year, .500 or higher in six. Sutphin is currently hitting .353 on the year to rank fourth in the league.
» Lexi Broadwater broke 1,000 assists on the year in KSU's last match, recording 42 assists against NJIT for a 14 assists per set average. Broadwater is one of the top setters in the country, averaging 11.68 assists per set to rank third in the NCAA. She is one of three players to record over 1,000 assists this season.Â
» Lauren Chastang had a career performance against the Highlanders, recording 16 kills on 29 attacks with only one error for a career-high .517 hitting percentage. She is currently ranked third in the ASUN averaging 3.81 kills per set and is one of just three players in the league to record over 300 kills this year. So far in her career, Chastang has accumulated 999 points, needing just one more point to become the sixth Owl in program history to record 1,000 career points.
» As a team, the Owls are one of the top killing teams in the country, averaging 14.05 kills per set to lead the ASUN and rank 18th in the country. Only 21 teams in the NCAA are currently averaging over 14 kills per set. If maintained, it would mark the first time in program history the Owls have finished the year averaging at least 14 kills per set. KSU's .247 hitting percentage ranks second in the conference and 46th in the nation.
» Four Owls,
Lauren Chastang,
Karlee Groover,
Bri Becerra and
Lexi Broadwater, rank among the ASUN's top-15 for total aces. Chastang's 51 aces ranks third in the NCAA, just six shy of the nation leader. As a team, KSU's 2.00 aces per set average ranks fourth in the country.
Set Up For SuccessÂ
Lexi Broadwater set a new standard for setters in 2018, and this year she is on track to raise that bar even more.
Averaging at least 14 assists per set in each of the last three matches, Broadwater has jumped into first in the ASUN and third in the NCAA with an 11.68 assists per set average.
With 59 assists at UNF, Broadwater has now recorded over 50 assists in seven matches this year, 40 or more in 15.
She is one of only six players in the country to average over 11.5 assists per set. If she maintains her current assists per set average, it would break the single-season record she set last season.
She recently broke 1,000 assists on the year, marking just the sixth time in program history an Owl has recorded over 1,000 assists in a season. Only Sara Metroka (2011, 2012, 2013) has recorded over 1,000 assists in multiple seasons.
Setting a career-high 63 assists against Furman, the senior tied the second-most assists ever in a single-match.
With 2,458 assists in her career, Broadwater is one of three players in program history to record over 2,000 career assists. Currently averaging 10.69 assists per set for her career, if maintained, she would set a new program career record.
Point-For-Point
Lauren Chastang has been one of the top point getters in the country this year ranked 16th in the NCAA with 413.5 points on the season.
She is well on her way to surpassing the single-season record for total points she set last season. She is also on track to break the points per set record, averaging 4.75 per set. Only two players, Sabrita Gulley and Justine Young, have averaged over four points per set in KSU single-season history.
With just one more point this season, Chastang will become the sixth Owl in program history to record 1,000 career points.
Only a junior, she already ranks fifth on the career kills list with 860, looking to become just the fifth Owl ever to break 1,000 career kills.Â
Ace in the Hole
KSU has dominated from the service line, averaging 2.00 aces per set to lead the ASUN and rank fourth in the nation.
KSU's 174 total aces is just one ace shy of tying the current record set last season. The Owls have recorded double-digit aces in six matches this year.
The Owls have set and tied the single-match record with 14 against Furman and North Alabama. The Owls' 14 against UNA also marked the most aces all-time in a four-set match.
Lauren Chastang has been a huge factor in KSU's success at the service line, recording three or more aces in eight matches this year. After tying her career-high with six against UNA, she set a new single-season record with 51 aces so far this year. She leads the ASUN and ranks seventh in the NCAA for aces per set (0.59) and third for total aces.
Including Chastang, six Owls have logged at least 10 aces on the year,
Karlee Groover,
Bri Becerra,
Lexi Broadwater,
Shelby Dennis and
Jessie Cohen.
Bri Becerra set the KSU record for aces in a three-set match with six at UNA. That performance vaulted her to ninth in the ASUN with 26 aces.
Karlee Groover (6th) also ranks among the league's top-10 for total aces with 30 on the year. Groover's 0.34 aces per set average comes in at eighth in the ASUN.Â
QUINtessentially dominant
Quin Sutphin recorded her 10th match this season hitting over .400 against NJIT. She is just one of four players in the league to hit over .350 on the season, ranked fourth with a .353 hitting percentage.
If she maintains her current hitting percentage, she would set a new single-season record.
The Fort Mill, S.C., native is the only player in the league to average over three kills per set while hitting over .300 and just one of two players to total at least 200 kills and maintain a .300 hitting percentage.Â
We Can Dig It
The Owls rank third in the league with a 14.79 digs per set average.
Five Owls have hit the century mark for digs with
Karlee Groover recording her 400th dig in KSU's recent match against NJIT. Groover has logged double-digit digs in all but two matches this year and is currently ranked fourth in the conference for both total digs (403) and digs per set (4.63).
The Newnan, Ga., native has totaled 20 or more digs in seven matches this year, tying her career-high with 32 against Liberty. With 1,074 digs in her career, Groover is just the fourth Owl in program history to record over 1,000 career digs.
The Film Room
The Bisons are looking to remain in the top-4 in the ASUN after dropping their last two matches to Stetson and Liberty. Lipscomb is currently fourth in the league standings with a 7-4 conference record.
The Owls won the first meeting this season, 3-1, in Nashville. Lipscomb's two recent losses snapped a six-match winning stretch.
Senior middle blocker leads the team in both kills (192) and blocks (62) to rank among the ASUN's top-15 in both categories.
Looking Ahead
After Saturday, KSU hosts league-leaders FGCU for their final home match of the season Friday night (Nov. 8) at 7 p.m.
