SOC: Owls End Non-Conference Play With 1-1 Draw Versus Mercer

Box Score (PDF) | Box Score (XML) Highlights

KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State closed out its non-conference schedule with a 1-1 draw with Mercer Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

KSU concluded a successful non-conference slate, posting a 7-2-1 record, and will open ASUN Conference play Friday versus Liberty at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
» Kennesaw State used a frequent formula of scoring early when Emely Sosa served a ball into Jenna Vollrath who drilled a shot just inside the left post to put the Owls up 1-0 at the 9:03 mark.
» That lead stood up until the 81st minute when Mercer's Abigail Zoeller hit a shot from straight on inside the box to score the equalizer.
» The Bears outshot the Owls, 17-12, with Kennesaw State goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao registering eight saves.

COACH SPEAK
"Mercer is a good team. They are having a lot of success, leading the country in goals and doing a lot of good things that works to their style," head coach Benji Walton said. "I think we had a little bit of trouble connecting passes and were our own worst enemy in the first half. I think we broke up their play a little bit better in the second half, it just didn't result in shots.

"It was a good test right before conference play, going into overtime, playing a physical team and a game that means something as both teams want to badly win," Walton added. "Being 7-2-1 in non-conference play is pretty good, we'll take that. We beat some real quality opponents and it was our toughest non-conference schedule since I've been here. I think we did a great job of being in every ballgame, except Alabama and Samford, and I thought we gave ourselves a chance each time out, and learned some things about ourselves"

NOTES
» The 7-2-1 start by the Owls marks their best since moving to the Division I level in 2005. Kennesaw State began the 2003 campaign 8-0 en route to a 25-1-0 record and the NCAA Division II national championship.
» The Owls improved to 4-0-1 at home this season and 5-0-2 in their last seven matches at Fifth Third Bank Stadium dating back to 2017.
