TROY, Ala. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team powered out of their four-match slump in a big way, sweeping Florida A&M, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14, to open the Troy Classic Friday morning.
How it happened: The Owls (7-4) came out of the gates swinging, behind a locked-in
Liesl Engelbrecht. The senior middle blocker was perfect in the opening set recording seven kills on seven swings with no errors.
KSU and FAMU (0-12) were even throughout most of the first set until freshman
Dani Ballou, in her first career start, opened the flood gates with a kill and an ace to put the Owls ahead 19-17. Ballou finished the match with seven kills.
From there, KSU never looked back, closing out the set on a 5-1 run to take the opening set, 25-19.
It was a similar start to the second set as both teams found themselves deadlocked at 14-14. The Owls buckled down to take 11 of the final 13 points, racing to a 25-16 set victory. Sophomore
Lauren Chastang recorded six kills and a block during KSU's final run to close out the set, finishing with seven kills, five digs and two blocks in the second.
KSU gained the edge early in the final set, taking advantage of FAMU's miscues to lead 9-5. The Owls pulled away following a 5-0 run capped off by back-to-back kills from Ballou to make it 15-9. Another 5-0 run sealed the match as the Owls recorded a dominant 25-14 third set victory.
