SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Kennesaw State softball team opened ASUN Conference play and split a doubleheader with defending champion USC Upstate Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.

Pitching dominated the two games with the Owls (16-9, 1-1) posting a 2-1 victory in game one, and the Spartans (19-6, 1-1) gaining a split of the doubleheader following a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, sophomore Alley Cutting (6-4) out-dueled Christina Biggerstaff (8-3) in the opener, allowing seven hits, one run, and striking out four.

Kennesaw State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Andrea Summey, and went ahead 2-0 in the fourth on freshman Patricia Awald's team-leading sixth home run of the season.

USC Upstate scored its run in the sixth before Cutting worked a scoreless seventh to secure the Owls' 10th straight win.

In the nightcap, Erin Hill (6-1) limited the Owls to a pair of singles by Maddie Roth and Awald to overshadow another solid outing by senior Abigail Green (5-4), who allowed just two hits, walked four and struck out six.

The Spartans' lone run came in the fourth when they loaded the bases with no outs, and went ahead 1-0 on a wild pitch.

Kennesaw State and USC Upstate will conclude the three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
