SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Abigail Green and
Alley Cutting combined on a six-hit shutout to lead the Kennesaw State softball team to a 1-0 victory and ASUN Conference series win over USC Upstate Sunday in Spartanburg, S.C.
Â
Green (6-4) and Cutting limited the Spartans (19-7, 1-2) to a pair of runs during the three-games, while helping the Owls (17-9, 2-1) record a series victory over the defending conference champion for the second year in a row. The victory marked KSU's 11th in its last 12 games.
Â
"I would be lying if I said this wasn't a huge series win for us," head coach
Pete D'Amour said. "Upstate has been at the top of the ASUN for a long time, and once again they're loaded.
Â
"A big emphasis for us since the fall has been pitching and defense and both were great this weekend," D'Amour said. "We have a lot of conference games ahead of us, but this was a good weekend for the Owls."
Â
Sunday's game was scoreless until the third inning when Kennesaw State scored an unearned run.
Olivia Tamewitz and
Patricia Awald singled with one out, and following a pop out,
Noelle Winkles reached on an error allowing Tamewitz to score what proved to me the decisive run.
Â
Green allowed three hits, two walks and struck out two in four innings before Cutting came on to work the final three innings and surrendered three hits and struck out five to earn her second save of the season.
Â
The Kennesaw State duo allowed 15 hits, two runs, walked six and struck out 17 in 20 innings over the weekend.
Â
The Owls are next in action on Wednesday when they host Liberty in a doubleheader at Bailey Park beginning at 4 p.m.
