KENNESAW, Ga. – Freshman
Patricia Awald went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a career-high tying four RBIs, and junior
Hailey Andrews struck out eight in a complete-game effort to lead the Kennesaw State softball team to an 8-2 victory over Fort Wayne during the second day of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament Saturday at Bailey Park.
Â
The win was the sixth in a row for the Owls (12-8), who completed a perfect week with a 5-0 record. A late afternoon rain and expected wet weather on Sunday cancelled the remainder of the tournament.
Â
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Kennesaw State tied the score in the second.
Lauren Bennett walked with two outs and
Olivia Tamewitz followed with a single that extended her hitting streak to a career-high 13 games.
Andrea Summey kept the rally going with an RBI single that plated Bennett and also scored Tamewitz following an error.
Â
Awald put the Owls ahead 3-2 with an opposite field home run to left field to lead off the third, and was in the middle of a two-run rally in the fifth as she singled and scored a run. Senior
Noelle Winkles had a clutch two-run single that provided KSU with a 5-2 lead.
Â
Kennesaw State capped the scoring with a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by Awald's two-run home run to center field. It marked Awald's first career two-homer game.
Â
The run support proved plenty for Andrews (3-0), who pitched seven innings, allowed two runs, walked one and struck out eight.
Â
The Owls are next scheduled to play on Wednesday when they host Georgia State at Bailey Park beginning at 6 p.m. Â
