Game Preview
Kennesaw State begins its 2018 season against Arizona State, who will be playing their first game as a program.
The game will be at Fifth Third Bank Stadium with the first draw happening at 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
Then on Sunday, KSU will host Vanderbilt. The Owls and Commodores have played each other every season KSU's program has been in existence.
Kennesaw State Team Notes
• In
Laura Maness' first season as head coach, she led the Owls to their best season in program history finishing with eight wins after upsetting Furman in the team's final game.
• The Owls finished last season with a 7-4 record at home. That was the best mark they've had at home in program history.
• KSU returns 22 players from a season ago while welcoming 12 newcomers to the team.
• Junior
Haley Swift and senior
Connor Zophy were both named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team. Swift led the team a season ago with 66 points with 37 goals and 29 assists. Zophy finished third on the team with 55 points scoring 29 goals and 26 assists. Both players set career highs with those numbers last season.
• The Owls offense was prolific last season scoring over 20 goals in six games and averaging 14.53 goals per game. That mark finished top 20 in the entire country. In one of those games, Kennesaw State scored 26 goals, which was the most in the NCAA last season.
• The Owls were outstanding at picking up ground balls and winning draw controls last season. KSU was second in the nation scooping up 24.64 ground balls per game and third in the nation winning 15.29 draw controls per game.
• Against Howard,
Connor Zophy finished with one goal and four assists giving her 100 career points. She is the fourth KSU player to reach the 100-point mark in program history.
• Sophmore
Izzy Palermo made a big impact in her freshman season on the offensive end. She finished the season with 30 points scoring 26 goals and four assists while also winning 29 draw controls and winning 28 ground balls.
• Another sophomore that made a big impact on the defensive end was
Maura Palandro. She started all 17 games last season and picked up 32 ground balls, won 16 draw controls and caused 15 turnovers.
• There are six seniors on this team with Zophy,
Laura Jordan,
RoseAnna Schiemer,
Emily Hallberg,
Monica Albertson and
Kaitlynn Moran.
• Jordan was one of the top defenders from a season ago finishing with 19 caused turnovers. She also picked up 29 ground balls and won 11 draw controls. Jordan has started almost every game of her career heading into her senior season.
• In all, the Owls have 12 players returning this season that started at least one game last year. Four of those 12 started every game last season.
Next Up
Kennesaw State will hit the road for the first time in the 2018 season as they travel to Marquette to play in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 18.
