MBB: Owls Use Big Second Half to Run Away From USC Upstate

KSU Outscores USC Upstate 57-32 in the Second Half

KENNESAW, Ga. 
– Kennesaw State used a huge second half after trailing by one at halftime to get a season sweep of the USC Upstate Spartans defeating them 93-69 in the KSU Convocation Center on Saturday, February 3.
 
The Owls outscored the Spartans 57-32 in the second half using several huge runs to break the game wide open.
 
The Owls were trailing early in the second half 44-43 and Kennesaw State went on a 22-4 run to take a comfortable lead and cruise to their third win in the ASUN.
 
James Scott was magnificent on the offensive end scoring 30 points and had four assists. Nick Masterson was the second leading scorer with 17 points and he had four assists as well.
 
In the first half, the Owls led by as many as eight points, but the Spartans got hot from behind the arc and ended up hitting eight threes in the first 20 minutes.
 
Upstate hit a layup right before the buzzer at the end of the first half to take a one-point lead into halftime.
 
Early in the second half, teams traded points back and forth before the Owls took control of the game.
 
Trailing by one in the second half, the Owls forced four turnovers over a three-minute stretch igniting a 9-0 run to go up 52-44 with 14:28 remaining in the game forcing the Spartans to use a timeout. The run extended to 13-0 before Upstate finally scored.
 
Over the entire 22-4 stretch, KSU forced six turnovers over a 5:36 stretch.
 
The Owls had a season low six turnovers in the game and on the offensive end they had 20 assists. That's the lowest turnover total this season.
 
The win moves Kennesaw State to 7-17 overall and 3-6 in the ASUN.
 
The Owls have two more home games remaining and they're next Thursday and Saturday. They will begin with North Florida on Thursday, February 8 at 7 p.m.

  • Scott finished the game with 30 points and four assists. That was the second time this season he has scored at least 30 points. He got going early in the game hitting 5-6 shots and finished the first half with 15 points.
  • Masterson scored 17 points inching him closer to that 1,000 point mark. He currently sits at 986 career points.
  • The Owls only had six turnovers in the game. That is the least amount of turnovers they've had since a season ago against North Florida. In the two games this season against USC Upstate, the Owls have had seven and six turnovers. Those are the two lowest outputs of the season.
  • To go along with only six turnovers, Kennesaw State also had 20 assists in the game. That is the fourth time this season that KSU has had at least 20 assists in a game.
  • After USC Upstate hit a layup right before the buzzer, the Spartans led 37-36 at the break. The Owls also trailed by one in Spartanburg, S.C. against Upstate earlier this season. KSU won both games.
