THE STORYLINE:Â
· A walk-off home run secured a 10-9 comeback victory before Kennesaw State plated six runs in the sixth inning in the second game to secure an 8-6 victory, doubling up on Evansville at Stillwell Stadium Saturday afternoon.
· With the sweep, the Owls (4-4) evened their record to .500 and have won three straight, while Evansville (1-5) dropped all three games.
GAME 1
· Evansville scored nine runs on 14 hits through the first five frames, scoring three in the first, one in the second and third, and two more in the fourth and fifth to take a six-run advantage at 9-3.
· RHP
Logan Hutchinson, a Valdosta, Ga., native, --who made his 2018 debut—tossed a scoreless sixth to keep the Aces off the board for the first time on the day.
· The Owls' bats responded, scoring a crooked two in the bottom halves of the sixth and seven to pull within 9-7.
·
Jake Franklin, who finished the game with a career-high four RBI and went 3-for-5 at the dish, drove in the tying runs in the eighth frame to deadlock the game at 9-9.
· With two outs in the top of the ninth, a double in the gap gave life to the Aces as the go-ahead run rounded third and headed home. But, a relay from
LaDonis Bryant to
Grant Williams to
Forrest Bramlett tagged out the runner at home to keep the game locked at 9-9.
·
Garrett Hodges, who entered late in the ballgame, connected on a fastball in the bottom of the ninth and registered his first home run of the season in walk-off fashion to lift the Owls past Evansville, 10-9.
· KSU's bullpen was stellar in Game 1, as Hutchinson,
Monty Horn and
Max Ryan (1-0), who picked up his first win in the Black and Gold, tossed a combined 4.0 scoreless frames and allowed just two hits.
· Offensively, Franklin (3-for-5, four RBI), Hodges (2-for-2, two RBI), Williams (1-for-4, RBI), Bramlett (1-for-4, two runs, RBI) and
Griffin Helms (2-for-5, two runs) paced the bats as Kennesaw State tallied 10 runs on 13 hits.
Â
GAME 2
· The Owls jumped out in front when senior
Taylor Allum hit his first home run of the season to right center field, handing Kennesaw State a 1-0 advantage.
· Evansville answered with a pair of home runs, plating five runs with three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
· Down four, the Owls responded with a six-run explosion in the bottom of the sixth. The frame included five walks, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch, registering just one hit in the inning to take a 7-5 lead.
· The Owls and Aces traded runs in the seventh as Allum drove home his second RBI on the night, doubling to the right field corner to score Franklin from first to extend the lead to 8-6.
· Kennesaw State received another strong performance out of the bullpen with
Taylor Wilkes (1-1) picking up the win. The Owls'
Jared Staples and
Nathan Dupree (save) also tossed scoreless outings.
· Offensively, Kennesaw State got productive nights at the plate from Allum (2-for-3, two RBI),
Jaylen Smith (1-for-3, RBI),
LaDonis Bryant (1-for-3, run, two RBI), and
Grant Williams and
David Chabut also recorded runs batted in.
