Owls Douse Fire 90-72 To Close Out Homestand

KENNESAW, Ga. – Freshman Ugo Obineke and redshirt-junior Tyler Hooker each recorded over 20 points as the Kennesaw State men's basketball team downed Southeastern 90-72 Thursday evening to close out its three-game homestand.
 
Four Owls finished the game in double figures as transfer Danny Lewis and Obineke set career-highs with 17 and 24 points, respectively.
 
How it happened: After a back-and-forth start, the Owls (3-10) pulled in front behind a 6-0 run capped off by a jumper from Kosta Jankovic to make it 13-8 at the 13:20 mark. KSU eventually built its lead to double-figures, 22-12, following a fast break layup from Lewis to cap off a 7-0 run with 10 minutes to go in the half.
 
The Owls led by as much as 13 points in the opening half, 33-20, before an 8-0 run from the Fire pulled it to within five points, 33-28, with 1:16 to play. Lewis eventually broke Southeastern's run with a three-pointer as KSU netted the final four points to lead 37-28 at the half.
 
Obineke came alive in the second half scoring KSU's first 10 points to give the Owls a 47-33 lead at the 16:56 mark. The Owls pushed their lead to 20 points after a 7-0 run made it 55-35 with 13:15 still to play.
 
KSU led by as much as 24 points, 67-43, before the Fire began to chip away at the Owls lead with a 7-0 run. KSU maintained its double-digit lead throughout an increasingly chippy second half in which a combined 31 fouls were called, resulting in 38 trips to the free throw line.
 
Obineke recorded 18 of his 24 points in the second half, with Lewis and Jankovic both netting double-digits in the final 20 minutes, as the Owls cruised to the final buzzer.
 
Notes: This is the first game this season in which four players have reached double-figures and only the second time two players have scored 20 or more points in a single-game … Ugo Obineke set his career-high 24 points going 11-of-19 from the floor, 9-of-12 in the second half … Tyler Hooker recorded 20 or more points for the second time in the last three games, fifth time this season, extending his double-digit streak to 11 games … It was also the second straight game Hooker recorded at least six assists and six rebounds … Danny Lewis set a new career-high for the second straight game with 17 points, logging double-figures in back-to-back games … Kosta Jankovic was the fourth Owl in double-figures with 13 points, his second straight game with 10 or more points … The Owls were big on the glass, outrebounding Southeastern 49-29 … KSU's 49 rebounds marks a season-high as five Owls recorded six or more rebounds in the game … Bryson Lockley, Isaac Mbuyamba and Jankovic all recorded eight rebounds while freshman Antonio Spencer and Hooker were one rebound shy of their career-highs with seven and six rebounds, respectively … As a team, the Owls finished the game with a 55.4 shooting percentage marking the first time this season they have shot 50 percent or better … KSU recorded a season-high 21 assists against the Fire.
 
Up Next: KSU has the next week off for the holidays before traveling to Atlanta to face in-state rival Georgia Tech Friday (Dec. 28) at 4 p.m.
