KENNESAW, Ga. -
The battle for control of the ASUN was certainly that as the Kennesaw State volleyball team went toe-to-toe with FGCU Sunday afternoon. In the end, the Eagles managed to record the win, grinding out a four-set victory, 23-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-22, to hand the Owls their second loss in conference play.

How it happened: KSU (21-6, 12-2) and FGCU (22-6, 13-1) showed why they are the top-two teams in the ASUN going point-for-point to open the first set. With FGCU maintaining a slim one-point lead, 14-13, the Eagles pulled away utilizing a 5-0 run to take a six-point advantage, 19-13.

KSU chipped away at the Eagles lead, getting to within two, 22-20. After a kill from the Eagles, Lauren Chastang responded for the Owls with a kill followed by an ace to spark a 5-0 run capped off by a block from Lexi Broadwater and Quin Sutphin to win the first set, 25-23.

The Owls took an early advantage in the second set with a kill from Sydni Shelton and an ace from Maddie Jones giving KSU a 10-7 lead. FGCU then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 14-10, extending that lead to 17-11 following another 3-0 run.

KSU pulled back to within two, 21-19, following kills from Dani Ballou and Chastang, but FGCU managed to get set point leading 24-20. The Owls fended off two straight set points, but couldn't pull off another comeback as a block from the Eagles sent both teams into intermission tied at one set a piece.

Out of the break, FGCU took the early edge up 5-3, building it to as high as 9-6. KSU rallied with a 3-0 run to tie the set at nine, but FGCU responded with a 3-0 run of their own to re-gain its lead. After another 3-0 run gave the Eagles an 18-14 lead, the Owls exploded for a 6-0 run behind three kills from Ballou and an ace from Broadwater to lead 20-18.

From there, the two teams traded points with KSU earning set point, 24-20. FGCU managed to survive, utilizing three straight errors from KSU to pull in front 25-24. The Eagles eventually won the set following a kill and a block to win 28-26.

The fourth set played out in a similar fashion as both teams went back-and-forth deep into the set tied 16-16. After FGCU took a two-point lead, 19-17, KSU answered with a 5-1 run, featuring three kills from Chastang, to pull ahead, 22-20.

Those would be the final points for the Owls as FGCU rattled off the next five straight to win the set 25-22.

Quotes: Head Coach Keith Schunzel
On FGCU's play…
"They played great tonight, frankly the last few weeks since we played them down there, they've been the hottest team in the league. They made some lineup changes and they got it going. They are big on the block, they served and passed it great today. They played a really good game."

On KSU's four seniors…
"What these four have done for our program, I don't think a lot of people realize, they are the winningest class we've ever had. We've won two regular season titles with them, a bunch of all-conference awards. And what really tops it off is that they are four of the best people you'll ever meet in your life. They are just incredible young women, they care about their teammates, they care about people, and they love being at Kennesaw State and competing for this team.I'm really proud of all four of them."

On facing Lipscomb Tuesday…
"There is a lot at stake. Seeding is still up for grabs, and Gulf Coast obviously has a huge advantage now going into the stretch with only one loss. There's a lot at stake for us, Lipscomb, obviously it's a huge rivalry. … We'll be ready to go Tuesday night."

Up next: The Owls will have to put this loss behind them quickly as they host Lipscomb Tuesday night in the final home match of the regular season at 7 p.m.
