THE STORYLINE:
· Kennesaw State jumped on Florida Gulf Coast from the beginning of the match and never relinquished control sweeping the Eagles for the first time since 2013.
The win moves KSU to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the ASUN.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Kennesaw State went on a 6-1 run to start the match and FGCU struggled to get back in the first set.
Maddie Jones and
Anaiah Boyer each had six kills in the first frame and KSU came up with three blocks to take the first set in commanding fashion, 25-14.
In the second set, FGCU kept it much closer. After the Eagles came back to tie the score up at 22, KSU used a timeout and went back ahead 24-22, but FGCU spoiled the two set points to stay alive. After tying the score at 24, FGCU had a service error giving Kennesaw State one more chance and
Sydni Shelton took advantage of it with a kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the decisive third set, Kennesaw State took a big lead early forcing FGCU to burn an early timeout. The set was back and forth, but the Owls held the lead until the Eagles tied the score up at 19.
Coming out of a Kennesaw State timeout, the Owls finished the match on a 6-2 run to sweep FGCU.
SCHUNZEL QUOTE
"I was really happy with our defensive effort tonight. I thought we did a nice job keying in on the hitters that we needed to and sticking with our game plan on that side of the ball. There are times when I would like our offense to run a little smoother, but I thought we managed the match tonight really well and still put up some nice numbers.
Madeline Johnson made a big difference giving us a spark off the bench and changed the momentum of the game for us."
