KENNESAW, Ga. –
Chandler Griffin hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive home the winning run and lift the Kennesaw State softball team to a 4-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast in game one that secured a split of the ASUN Conference doubleheader Saturday at Bailey Park.
After totaling 11 hits in the opener, the Owls (32-15, 8-6) were held to just five in game two and forced to settle for split after falling 3-0 to the Eagles (22-24, 4-7) on Senior Day.
Griffin's walk-off hit in game one scored
Beth McCulley, who doubled with one out, and made a winner of
Abigail Green (4-1), who pitched six innings of relief, allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five as she matched the longest outing of her Owls career.
Green and Griffin, along with
Taylor Denton,
Courtney Sutter and
Logan Viers, were part of a group of five seniors honored before the game.
In game one, Kennesaw State fell behind 3-0 in the second inning before scoring two runs in the third and tying the score in the fifth.
Olivia Tamewitz and
Katey Lynch produced RBI singles in the third inning, and Sutter's infield groundout scored
Hannah Thomason with the tying run in the fifth.
McCulley started the Owls' winning rally with a double to left-center field and Griffin followed with a two-strike single to left field to plate McCulley.
Viers (12-6) started game two and retired the first nine batters she faced before Kelsey Huff opened the fourth with a bunt single and scored later in the inning on an infield out. The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs on a two-run home run by Bri Imnamorato in the sixth inning.
The three runs proved plenty for Taylor Wade (8-11) who earned the victory after pitching seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out two.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
NOTE: In between games of Saturday's doubleheader, the Kennesaw State softball program welcomed two individuals into its Circle Honor as it honored Jessica Cross (2008-12) and Jolene Morris (1985-88).
