CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Senior
Courtney Sutter hit a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, to help Kennesaw State to a 3-1 victory over Radford in the final game of the Chattanooga Challenge on Sunday.
Â
Sutter's power, combined with a complete-game pitching effort by senior
Logan Viers, concluded an undefeated weekend for the Owls (7-2) who posted a 4-0 record during the three-day tournament.
Â
"Our players did a good job preparing themselves to play this weekend under adverse conditions," head coach
Pete D'Amour said. "We have to continue to get better and improve, but there isn't a coach in the country that wouldn't take an undefeated weekend."
Â
After Kennesaw State fell behind 1-0 on a home run in the top of the fourth, Sutter answered with a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score.
Â
Viers (3-1) kept the score tied until the Owls rallied in the sixth inning. Freshman
Olivia Tamewitz, who was 2-for-3, opened the frame with a bunt single and stole second base before scoring on Sutter's home run.
Â
In her fourth complete game of the season, Viers scattered six hits, one run and struck out four.
Â
Sutter led the Owls offensively over the weekend, batting .667 (8-for-12) with four runs scored, double, triple, two home runs, a 1.417 slugging percentage, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Tamewitz also was productive over the four games, batting .615 (8-for-13) with four runs scored, three extra base hits, three RBIs and three stolen bases.
Â
In the circle, freshman
Alley Cutting turned in a pair of impressive performances, posting a 2-0 record and 1.05 ERA after working 13 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits, two runs, walking one and striking out 23.
