KENNESAW, Ga. – Grand slams by
Katey Lynch and
Courtney Sutter powered Kennesaw State to an 11-3 victory in game two and a split of its doubleheader with Radford Friday (Feb. 24) at Bailey Park.
After falling 10-6 in the opener, the Owls (8-3) bounced back to record the victory in the nightcap as redshirt junior
Abigail Green (2-0) allowed four hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out a career-high 10 batters.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by
Chandler Griffin, Kennesaw State exploded for six runs in the second as it sent nine batters to the plate. The big blow was a grand slam deep over the right field fence by Sutter that gave the Owls a 7-0 lead.
Radford (4-3) chipped away at the lead, scoring a single run in the fifth and adding two in the top of the sixth before Lynch ended the game with a grand slam to leftfield in the bottom of the inning.
In the opener, the Highlanders collected 13 hits and used a five-run third inning to take a 5-2 lead, after the Owls scored twice in the first inning on a two-run double by Sutter.
Sutter had an impressive afternoon as she went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, two home runs, walked four times, reached base in seven of eight plate appearances, and totaled seven RBIs. Her two home runs gave her 26 for her career and moved her into seventh place on Kennesaw State's all-time home run list.
Hannah Thomason continued to be the table setter at the top of the lineup for the Owls as she went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, reached base in five of seven plate appearances and stole three bases during the two games.
Kennesaw State is back in action on Saturday (Feb. 25) when it hosts Illinois in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
