KENNESAW, Ga. – A solid debut in the circle by redshirt junior
Abigail Green combined with a 13-hit attack led the way as Kennesaw State defeated Morehead State, 9-0, during the final day of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament Sunday (Feb. 12) at Bailey Park.
Green (1-0) was supplied with all the run support that she and
Jenna Kniss would need in the first inning when the Owls (3-2) sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. Kennesaw State added two more in the second and concluded the scoring with a three-run fourth inning.
Eight of the nine batters in the Owls' starting lineup had at least one hit, with junior
Noelle Winkles leading the attack with a pair of hits, two runs scored and three RBIs. Redshirt sophomore
Jessie Mullen had two hits and two RBIs and freshman
Olivia Tamewitz collected two hits and scored twice. Sophomore
Hannah Thomason and senior
Courtney Sutter also collected two hits apiece.
Thomason and Tamewitz set the table at the top of the lineup, reaching base a combined five times, while the first four batters in the lineup went 7-for-10 with eight runs scored and four RBIs. Senior
Chandler Griffin, hitting third in the lineup, had a single, RBI and three runs scored.
During her four-plus innings of work, Green allowed three hits and struck out five while not walking a batter. Kniss made her first appearance of the season and allowed a single in one inning of work.
The combined shutout by Green and Kniss marked the third in five games for Kennesaw State, which opened the season Friday (Feb. 10) with back-to-back shutouts against Saint Louis and South Carolina State.
The Owls are next in action on Friday (Feb. 17) when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in the Chattanooga Challenge Presented by Ruby Falls. Kennesaw State opens play against IUPUI beginning at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
