Kennesaw State Team Notes
•
Katarina Morton was named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week after the opening weekend where she totaled 68 digs averaging 5.67 digs per set. To follow up her strong weekend performance, she had 27 more digs against Auburn and is now averaging 5.59 per set.
• Morton has had 20+ digs in three of the four matches so far this season following her 27-dig performance against Auburn. In the Kennesaw State Invitational she tied a school record with 27 digs in the four-set match against Liberty and then had 22 digs in the three-set match with Pittsburgh. The one match that she didn't have 20 this season, she ended up with 19 against Missouri.
• On Tuesday, KSU fell to Auburn in an intense five-set match on the road. That is the second time this season that the Owls have fallen in a five setter to an SEC opponent this season as Missouri also topped them in five. In both matches, KSU led 2-1 going into the fourth set.
• On the offensive end, three sophomores have carried the load early in the season as
Sydni Shelton leads the team with 39 kills and
Amariah Boyer and
Liesl Engelbrecht both have 32 kills.
• Defensively, KSU is also led by Am. Boyer and Engelbrecht as both are leading the team in blocks. Boyer has 16.0 and Engelbrecht has 14 for the Owls. As a team, KSU has 31.0 total averaging just under eight blocks each match.
• Auburn was the second SEC team that Kennesaw State has taken on so far this season. The Owls have a tough non-conference schedule taking on five power five schools against three SEC and two ACC teams. The SEC teams are Missouri, Auburn and Georgia and the ACC teams are Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech.
• Kennesaw State is coming off of its best season in school history in 2015 as it posted 19 wins and made it to its first Atlantic Sun Championship game.
• After finishing third in the ASUN a season ago, the Owls were picked to finish second this year as they return all of their starters.
• The team had four players honored with preseason awards as
Katarina Morton was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and
Anaiah Boyer,
Sydni Shelton and
Kristi Piedimonte were all named to the Preseason All-Conference team.
