KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's soccer team opened its home schedule with a 0-0 tie against local rival Georgia State Monday (Aug. 22) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
The Owls (1-0-1) had scoring chances throughout the match but were unlucky as several shots hit the post or just missed the mark. Head coach
Benji Walton's team showed some encouraging signs as it pitched its second consecutive shutout to the open the season.
BENJI BITES
"That was a hard-fought college soccer game and we still kept a clean sheet and now we have to execute on the other side (offensive) of the ball," Walton said. "If we start doing that, we won't have these long overtime games."
Â
WALTON ON THE PLAY OF THE DEFENSE
"Our defensive shape I've been fairly pleased with. At times we've had some errors where we have to work on things, but overall our backline is coming together.
Abby Roth has been the anchor back there. She's communicating like crazy and trying to keep things organized. It's a learning process. We're really challenging them with some new ideas as to how we're going to defend and they've really responded. Little by little it gets a little better and, hopefully, we continue to make strides in that direction."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Overtime: Late in the first overtime, senior goalkeeper
Catherine McDuff-Viau and the defense came up with two big saves as Georgia State (1-0-1) had a pair of close-range shots that were blocked for saves.
Â
Second Overtime: Just a minute into the second overtime, Kennesaw State had a chance to notch the game-winner but senior
Monica Herrera's bullet shot from inside the box hit the post.
Â
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
For the second consecutive match, the Owls out-shot their opponent as they held a 14-11 advantage over the Panthers, including a 6-5 edge in shots-on-goal. KSU also had 10 corner kicks, to six for Georgia State.
Â
HOME OPENERS
The Owls saw their record move to 12-2-2 in home openers. Â
