FORT MYERS, Fla. – Logan Viers tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout to lead Kennesaw State to a 3-0 victory over Lipscomb in a first round game of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on Wednesday on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast.

The Owls (28-26) will be back in action on Thursday (May 12) when they take on No. 1 seed FGCU at 12:30 p.m.

"I'm very proud of these kids. We played one of our best games of the year tonight," head coach Tory Acheson said. "Logan pitched great, we played great defense and got some clutch hits."

Viers (13-9) walked one and struck out a career-high tying seven while throwing 80 pitches. After allowing a two-out double in the second inning, the Owls' right-hander retired 11 in a row before hitting a batter and allowing a bloop single with one out in the sixth inning.

The Owls took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Kara Chambers opened the frame with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Taylor Denton, moved to third on a single to center field by Megan Veringa and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Rachel Dennis.

Chambers was back at it in the bottom of fifth as she delivered a two-out run-scoring double to score Missy Perkowski, who reached base on an error and stole second. Denton followed with a double to score Chambers and provide the Owls with a 3-0 lead.

"The back-to-back hits to score the last two runs were big," Acheson said. "It was great to see Missy get on, steal a base and then get driven in by Kara. Then for Taylor to come through was a thing of beauty.

"Now it's on to tomorrow and a tough match-up with Florida Gulf Coast," Acheson added. "They have been on fire since we lost the Sunday (April 17) game to them a few weeks ago. It will be a big challenge, but I think our kids will respond. Hopefully, another Owl Proud moment."

Thursday's game can be viewed live on ESPN3 with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Friday.
