KENNESAW, Ga. – Sparked by a complete team effort, the Kennesaw State women's tennis team recorded a 7-0 victory over visiting NJIT Thursday (April 7) at Betty L. Siegel Student Recreation & Activities Center in Kennesaw.
The Owls (2-15, 1-3) won two of the three doubles matches to capture the doubles point then swept through singles play.
"We have been improving all season and today really showed that," assistant head coach
Miranda Foley said. "The girls were very business-like in their approach and we were on it from the start. We will celebrate our victory and then look to re-focus for USC Upstate on Saturday."
Cristina Martin and
Alexandra Mercado posted a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles and Grabiela Bueno and
Isabela Castro were credited with a win by default at No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match that included
Laura Hopton and
Ashleigh De Wet was not completed.
Kennesaw State captured straight-set wins and No. 1 through No. 5 singles, while
Jessica Cantrell won by default as NJIT did not have a player.
Hopton won by scores of 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Castro posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory and No. 4 and De Wet was victorious at No. 5 by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
Mercado and Martin were forced to second-set tiebreakers before winning their matches at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Kennesaw State will be back in action on Saturday (April 9) when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate beginning at 10 a.m.
