KENNESAW, Ga. – A seventh-inning rally came up a run short as Kennesaw State fell 3-2 to visiting North Florida in the rubber game of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series Sunday afternoon at Bailey Park in Kennesaw.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the final frame, the Owls (21-15, 5-4) advanced runners into scoring position with one out, but were only able to push across one run as Logan Green (6-10) recorded the final two outs to preserve the win for the Ospreys (14-19, 3-3).
"We fought hard today but just couldn't get a clutch hit, again," head coach
Tory Acheson said. "We are getting hits but just not putting them together. We played hard and made some big plays. Hopefully, we can use these upcoming non-conference games to work through some things."
North Florida picked up a big insurance run in the top half of the seventh as it took advantage of a leadoff single and plated a run with two outs.
The Ospreys took an early lead scoring a run in the first inning on a home run by Katie Mandigo against Owls starter
Morgan Sikes (8-4). North Florida added to its lead in the second inning before Kennesaw State broke through for a run in the third on a single by
Missy Perkowski that scored
Kara Chambers, who opened the frame with a triple to right-centerfield.
Chambers led the Owls offense as she went 3-for-4.
Taylor Denton added two hits and scored a run, and
Jenna Kniss recorded an RBI on an infield out.
Kennesaw State received another solid outing in the circle from
Logan Viers, who came on in relief in the third with two runners in scoring position and no outs, and kept the Ospreys from scoring. In five innings of work, Viers allowed four hits, a run, one walk and struck out two.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday (Mar. 5) when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to take on nationally-ranked Tennessee beginning at 6 p.m. (ET).
NOTES • With two hits on Sunday, junior
Taylor Denton has now hit safely in 12 in of her last 13 games. During that stretch she is batting .400 (18-for-45) with 12 runs scored, two doubles, six RBIs and is 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts.
* Senior
Rachel Dennis, who went 1-for-3 and reached base twice, continued her outstanding play in left field as she robbed Alex Arciola of a home run in the fifth inning to end the frame.
