JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior
Kara Chambers and junior
Courtney Sutter each collected three hits, and junior right-hander
Logan Viers allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings to lead Kennesaw State to a 7-1 victory and an Atlantic Sun Conference series win over Jacksonville Sunday at the Pruitt Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.
Sutter put an exclamation point on the Owls' (17-10, 2-1) victory with a grand slam in the seventh inning to finish with a season-high five RBIs.
Kennesaw State also displayed some outstanding defense as sophomore center fielder
Noelle Winkles turned in a couple web gems as she brought back a potential two-run home run to end the first inning, and made a nice running catch near the fence to seal the victory.
"It was a great way to end the weekend. It was a total team effort," head coach
Tory Acheson said. "We had great pitching from Logan and Morgan (Sikes), a couple of ESPN Top 10 catches by Noelle, and some big hits when we needed them. Courtney's home run was the backbreaker, but we did a much better job offensively all day."
The Owls took an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Sutter that scored Chambers from second base after she singled to lead off the game and stole second.
Jacksonville (16-16, 1-2) answered with a run in the bottom half the frame with a home run before Kennesaw State scored twice in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead on a two-run single by senior
Missy Perkowski for one of her two hits in the game.
Junior
Taylor Denton also collected two hits and scored two runs for the Owls, who collected 13 hits on the afternoon.
Three of those hits came with consecutive at-bats with one out in the seventh to set the stage for Sutter's heroics as Winkles, Chambers and Denton reached on bunt singles.
"The three straight but singles to set up the grand slam were a thing of beauty," Acheson said. "I'm very proud of these kids for the way they bounced back."
Viers, who improved to 8-3 on the season, allowed five hits, one run, struck out one and did not walk a batter. Sikes worked the final 1 1/3 innings and surrendered one hit and walked a batter.
Kennesaw State returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 22) when it travels to Birmingham to take on Samford beginning at 6 p.m. (ET).
