Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Kennesaw State women's track and field team scored the most points ever in an Atlantic Sun Championship meet, but were unable to overcome a very tough Jacksonville team to claim the conference championship title.
The women scored a total of 220.5 points in the two day meet which was just 24.5 points behind Jacksonville. On day two, the women collected three wins, 13 medals and scored 141 points on the final day of action.
"Our women performed really well this weekend," director of track and field
Andy Eggerth said. "In fact, they performed well enough to score more points than any team in conference history and 140 points ahead of the next closest finisher. Unfortunately, JU did the same feat and ended the day with 22 more points than us."
In the field events,
Shermaine Pinkard finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 18.10m (59'04.75").
De'Von Johnson took home a second place finish in the triple jump with a school record leap of 12.41m with (40'08.75).
Erica Sergeant (3.69m) and
Katie Frey (3.39m) made the podium after finishing second and third in the pole vault.
"During practice and meets especially, I always pay close attention to feedback from my coaches because I don't want to make the same mistakes twice," Johnson said. "That definitely played a huge role in why I was able to pr in multiple events in the triple jump, and the 60m. Those 30 seconds of criticism are crucial and you have to be able to make those changes right away in order to progress."
The Owls got a pair of strong performances from junior
Kidan Kidane. Having won the 3k the night before, Kidane charged to the lead in the one mile run and never looked back running a school record time of 4:51.93. After a quick cool down, massage, and another warmup she returned to track for the 5,000m race. She led all but one lap in the race and finished second setting another school record time of 16:52.15.
"I just wanted to run as hard as I could for my team and be able to get us every possible point." Kidane said. "I wasn't too concerned about times as much as I was about placement and scores. It hurt physically and was challenging mentally, but the support and encouragement I got from my team was more than enough to get me through it all."
Maileka Slayton picked up pair of titles in the 200m and 400m races. She won the 400m after flying around the track in a school record time of 56.43 seconds. She would put a tough 60m race behind her in which she finished eighth in a loaded heat by cruising to a win in the 200m in 24.46 seconds.
"The 200,400, and 4x400 relay were all heart for me today," Slayton said. "I knew that I had four events today and my team needed me to run hard and that's what I did. I left it all out there for my team today."
The women's 4x400m team of
Diaja Oliver,
Dollitia Thomas,
Latoya Hunt , and Slayton combined to picked up a second place finish with a time of 3:53.93.
"I'm really proud of our women, but so disappointed in the result. We've upped our game, but great isn't good enough when JU continues to bring it to a higher level each year. We will continue to aim for perfection," Eggerth said.
