Box Score (XML) | Box Score (PDF) DELAND, Fla. – Looking to keep the momentum going after sweeping the two Atlantic Sun leaders a week ago, Kennesaw State did just that beating Stetson 92-82 in a game where they led for over 38 minutes to get to 10-18 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Senior point guard and A-Sun Co-Player of the Week
Yonel Brown scored 28 points and was second on the team with seven rebounds.
Stetson scored the first points of the game, but Brown got the Owls going, reeling off eight straight points putting them up by six.
Bernard Morena found his offensive touch when he also scored eight straight points later in the first half to put the Owls up 10 momentarily.
The Hatters cut the lead down to three, but
Kendrick Ray beat the buzzer to make the score 42-37 at the break. In the first half, the Owls assisted on nine of the team's 18 field goals and shot 47.4 percent from the floor.
Stetson tied the game up early in the second half, but KSU went on a 10-3 run to regain the lead. From there, Brown took the game over pushing the Owls lead to 13 after getting an old fashioned three-point play and then hitting a trey on the next possession to go up 13.
The Hatters didn't threaten the Owls after that, only briefly cutting the lead to single-digits with over a minute to go in the game. Stetson started fouling, but Kennesaw State answered by making 10-13 from the charity stripe down the stretch.
Aubrey Williams scored in double-figures for the third game in a row and fourth time in five games. Tonight he went 4-5 from the floor and 9-19 from the free throw line. Morena and Ray were the other Owls in double figures as they both had 16 points.
Next up, Kennesaw State will take on Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, February 20 at 7:05 p.m. Gulf Coast is currently sitting in third place in the A-Sun standings and one game ahead of Kennesaw State.
On the Win against Stetson"Our defensive energy has improved, and I think that's the difference right now. Our recognition on defense as far as what we need to do has been very consistent. Offensively, guys are getting a better feel for each other. Any time we have double the assists over turnovers, that's a good indication that leads to balanced scoring. It was a tremendous effort by everyone that stepped on the floor and that's what we need. Every person that steps on the floor needs to give us a consistent effort both offensively and defensively, and that's what we've gotten over the last few games."
