KENNESAW, Ga. -- Senior
Kendrick Ray scored 18 points, eclipsing 1,000 points in his career, leading Kennesaw State to an 89-76 victory over North Georgia in a New Year's Eve matinee at the KSU Convocation Center on Saturday.
Â
Ray scored 12 of his 18 before the break, and a jumper with 65 seconds remaining in the first half allowed him to become the Owls' most recent 1,000-point scorer. Kennesaw State has won two of its last three and improved to 5-10 overall.
Â
Aubrey Williams added 10 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double this season, while
Nick Masterson knocked down all five of his three-point attempts and led all scorers with 19 points.
James Scott chipped in 15 points – one shy of his career high -- to round out four Owls in double figures.
Â
The Owls led just 47-44 at the half, but finally shook the pesky Division-II Nighthawks (6-5) midway through the second half. A 13-3 run, punctuated by a three-point play from
Tyler Hooker, gave the hosts a 70-57 margin with 9:36 left.
Â
UNG closed it to 72-66, but an 11-2 spurt gave the Owls their largest lead at 83-68 with 2:25 remaining.
Â
Kennesaw State shot a crisp 48% from the field, matched its season-high for assists with 21 and swatted away five shots. The Owls limited North Georgia to just 25% shooting in the second half.
Â
Shaquan Cantrell paced the visitors with 18 points. Tyler Dominy added 13.
Â
The Owls play one final non-conference game at Tennessee State on Monday at 7 p.m. before entering ASUN Conference play next weekend.
