FORT MYERS, Fla. – A season that provided many highlights and positives came to a disappointing conclusion as the Kennesaw State women's soccer team fell 2-1 to regular-season champion Florida Gulf Coast in the semifinals of the ASUN Conference Tournament Friday (Nov. 4) at the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
Â
The Owls conclude their season 10-8-1, while the Eagles (13-4-1) advance to face Lipscomb in the tournament final Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).
Â
The Eagles struck first, scoring in the 22nd minute on a goal by Emilie Olsen. The Owls had a great opportunity to tie the score in the 35th minute as
Cassidy Kemp was one-on-one with FGCU goalkeeper Melissa Weck, who made a diving save.
Â
Florida Gulf Coast made that goal stand up, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime on the strength of solid goalkeeping by Weck, who recorded four saves. The Eagles also had a 10-6 shot advantage.
Â
The backbreaker for the Owls came less than two minutes into the second half when the Tabby Tindell, the ASUN's all-time leading scorer, scored off a corner kick that gave FGCU a 2-0 lead.
Â
Kennesaw State continued to battle throughout the second half and finally beat Weck, scoring off a corner kick when
Emely Sosa knocked in a header in the 83rd minute.
Â
In an evenly played match, each team had 17 shots, testing both goalkeepers as KSU goalie
Mady Carter recorded seven saves while Weck finished the match with six.
