THE STORYLINE:
- The Kennesaw State volleyball team earned a share of its first ever regular season ASUN Championship with a sweep over the Jacksonville Dolphins in the KSU Convocation Center. The Owls finished their ASUN season 12-2 and will now look forward to the conference tournament next week.
SCHUNZEL QUOTE:
"It's hard to put into a quote how far we've come in this four year journey we've been on. We've had too many people to name that have helped us along the way but from the alumni to our coaching staff to the athletic administration and our current players who all bought into Kennesaw State and this vision. I couldn't be more proud and thrilled for everyone to bring home this program's first ever conference championship."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
First Set:Â The Owls controlled most of the first set, but Jacksonville hung around and put some pressure on the Owls late taking a 23-22 lead. KSU responded with a 3-0 run on a kill from
Sydni Shelton and back-to-back blocks from
Liesl Engelbrecht and
Kristi Piedimonte to put the Owls up 1-0.
Second Set:Â With the set tied early, Kennesaw State took control going ahead 16-13. JU used a timeout, but it didn't matter as the Owls kept their run going closing the set out on a 9-3 spurt to go up 2-0 in the match.
Â
Third Set: KSU found themselves down early in the third and used a timeout trailing 9-5. After the timeout, Kennesaw State slowly started withering away Jacksonville's lead to tie it up at 13. The teams went point for point until it was tied at 18, and the Owls took it up another notch. With a regular season championship in their grasp, Kennesaw State closed out the set on a 7-0 run to clinch the program's first ever regular season title.
