THE STORYLINE:
· In a big match on Kennesaw State's home floor, Lipscomb was victorious by a total of six points in all three sets combined. The loss on the home floor snapped KSU's 12 match winning streak, but the Owls still lead the ASUN with a record of 7-1.
Â
SCHUNZEL QUOTE:
"I'm really proud of the level that we played at tonight. We knew Lipscomb would come in hungry and play a very high level match because they had to, to stay within reach of the standings. I was really happy with how we prepared mentally and physically into the match. Hats off to Lipscomb making plays down the stretch in each set to get out of here with a win. Sometimes volleyball coaches can sound like broken records, but high level volleyball comes down to less than five big plays each set and tonight they made more than we did after point 20. I'm proud of our team. We're going to keep our heads up and are still in a really good place moving forward."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
First Set:Â Neither team could get any distance from the other as both went almost shot-for-shot the entire set. The largest lead either team had was three by Lipscomb, but facing their biggest deficit, the Owls responded with a 4-0 run taking an 18-17 lead and forcing LU to use a timeout. With the set tied at 23, the Bisons got two kills from Maddie Phillips and Carlyle Nusbaum.
Â
Second Set:Â Second set was very similar to the first, except Lipscomb took their lead a little earlier up 10-6. The Owls evened the score at 15, but couldn't get over the hump. The teams went point for point from that point until 22 all when Lipscomb ran off two straight and then Taylor Racich closed the door on the Owls comeback attempt.
Third Set:Â With their backs against the wall, the Owls came out flying in the third going ahead 10-4 early. Lipscomb widdled away the lead coming back to tie the score at 13. KSU opened up another lead up 22-19 after a
Rachel Taylor kill, but Lipscomb came right back to tie the score at 22. Neither team gave an inch after that going point-for-point once again. Kennesaw State spoiled a match point and had four set points, but Lipscomb was too tough coming up with play after play eventually taking the final set 30-28.
