ATLANTA, Ga. – In the first true road test of the season against Georgia State, the Owls responded when trailing 2-1 in the match by winning the final two sets to win the five-set thriller.
In front of an energetic crowd, the Owls weathered the early storm from the Panthers by going on an 11-1 run to take a 20-16 lead in the first. Georgia State had one more run in them by spoiling three set points for the Owls, but KSU closed the first out with a
Cierra Royster kill.
The second set was tied at 12 before the Panthers went on a 13-2 run to even the match at one set each. Georgia State used that momentum to take the lead in the third set and grab a 2-1 lead in the match.
With the home crowd behind the Panthers and all of the momentum on their side, KSU came out in the fourth determined to force a fifth set. Neither team gave an inch until the Owls went on a 3-0 run to take a 16-13 lead forcing the Panthers to use a timeout. Late in the set, Georgia State fended off two set points before a ball-handling error and a Boyer kill down the line evened the match for the Owls.
With the match tied at two, Kennesaw State took all of the drama out of the fifth set by starting the set on a 9-3 run and finished off the match 15-4.
Coach Schunzel on the Big Road Win"As always, I'm extremely proud of how hard our team fought and battled tonight. That is something that has become a staple of this program and I'm so incredibly proud of that. We had a lot of players contribute on and off the court and that's great to see. As expected, Georgia State had a rowdy crowd and competed very well. They have some big arms and are a well-coached team. Being our first true road match of the season, it's super encouraging that we could play as poorly as we did in sets two and three where we literally got served off the court and then battled back and hit over .300 in set four and .400 in set five. We have a long way to go, but another in-state win, especially on the road says a lot about our team early in the season."
Kennesaw State Head Coach Keith Schunzel Notes- With the team moving to 6-0 on the season, the Owls extend their best start in school history.
- This is the second time this season that Kennesaw State has been facing a 2-1 deficit and both times the team has responded by winning in five sets. The two five-set wins are the only two five setters in the Atlantic Sun so far this year.
