FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 6-seeded Kennesaw State baseball team dropped its Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament opening game to No. 1-seed North Florida on Wednesday (May 20) afternoon, 14-0, at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida.
With the loss, the Owls (28-27) will take on the loser of game two between No. 2-seed Lipscomb and No. 5-seeded Florida Golf Coast University –which is scheduled to play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday— in an elimination game Thursday (May 21) morning. The contest is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on ESPN3.
Redshirt-freshman
Taylor Allum, who was named to the Second Team All-Conference and All-Freshmen teams earlier this week, paced KSU's lineup going 2-for-3 at the plate –extending his hitting streak to nine games. Kennesaw State's
Chris Erwin (1-for-3) and
Brennan Morgan (1-for-3) chipped in with a hit each to total the Owls' four hits in the game.
Kennesaw State could not overcome an early offensive outburst from the Ospreys that plated 10 runs over the first four innings to set the tone in the game. In all, UNF scored in six of its eight at-bats in the ballgame, plating at least two runs in each scoring inning to take game one.
UNF's Evan Incinelli (6-3) backed the offense with a complete game on the mound, allowing just four hits to earn the win on the mound.
On the other side of the mound, KSU used four pitchers throughout the game.
Jordan Hillyer (4-5) was credited with the tough loss, allowing seven runs (five unearned) and eight hits over 2.1 innings on the mound.
Kennesaw State's
Kendall Hawkins worked a scoreless seventh frame in his relief work, allowing no hits while striking out one.
Logan Hutchinson and
Jordan Versteeg also made appearances in the ballgame out of the bullpen.
The contest marked the fourth time in less than a week North Florida and Kennesaw State played each other, coming off a three-game series in the final weekend of the regular season last week in Jacksonville, Florida. Each game was decided by one run, as the Ospreys took 2-of-3 from the Owl
