AUBURN, Ala. – The Kennesaw State baseball team struggled to finds its offensive rhythm Wednesday (April 29) evening, dropping a midweek clash to Auburn University on SEC Network in front of 2,521 fans at Plainsman Park, 6-0.
The Owls (25-21) scratched out just three hits against the Tigers (30-16), as
Corey Greeson (1-for-4),
Brennan Morgan (1-for-3) and
Colin Bennett (1-for-3) paced the lineup for KSU.
Auburn's Robby Clements (4-0) shut down the Kennesaw State's potent offense, allowing no runs over a career-high 7.0 innings while striking out eight batters to earn the win.
On the other side of the mound, KSU's
Chris Erwin (4-3) was charged with the hard-fought loss, giving up five runs on nine hits over 7.0 innings of work on the bump. The lefthander struck out six Tiger batters and walked three in his outing.
Auburn scored the game's first runs in the second inning, coming off the bat of leadoff hitter Kyler Deese. With two outs in the frame, Deese hit his second home run of the season, bringing in three runs to put the Tigers up 3-0.
The home team—who hasn't had a losing season on its home grass since 1983—picked up runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings on four hits and two sacrifice bunts to help extend its lead to 6-0.
Meanwhile, the Owls placed just three runners on the bases in the second, third and fifth innings, unable to bring any home on the night. KSU failed to score a run in a game for just the third time this season.
Jordan Versteeg made his sixth appearance on the mound, coming out of the bullpen to work the eighth inning. The righthander allowed one run on one hit in his inning of relief, while striking out one batter.
