Box Score (XML) | Box Score (PDF) NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After having fun at the Atlantic Sun Tournament banquet last night, the Owls were all business on the court tonight in the sweep of Stetson in the A-Sun Quarterfinals.
Â
Both team's came out with intensity in the first set with the largest lead KSU had was only by three and they only trailed by as many as two. With the Owls trailing 14-13,
Kelly Marcinek took the set over winning the next four points with three kills and a service ace to force a Stetson timeout with KSU leading 17-15. The Owls held the lead until Stetson went on a 3-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. Out of a Kennesaw State timeout, Stetson had their sixth service error of the set, a block error on an
Anaiah Boyer attack and an attack error for the Owls to clinch the opening set 25-23.
Â
With the Owls leading 15-13 in the second set,
Kristi Piedimonte stepped up to serve and guided the Owls on an 8-0 run with a couple of service aces to put the Owls up comfortably at 22-13. A few points later,
Liesl Engelbrecht finished the set off with a kill to put the Owls up 2-0 in the match.
Â
Looking to close the match out in three and trailing 4-1 early, the Owls went on an 8-1 run to take a 9-5 lead in the third. That lead was extended to 19-13 on a
Maddie Jones kill, but then Stetson dug their feet in and stormed back. The Hatters won 10 of the next 14 points to tie the score at 23, but couldn't get over the hump and take the lead. They spoiled one match point, but couldn't spoil the second as Marcinek picked up her 13
th kill to close out Stetson.
Â
Now, Kennesaw State will have a quick turnaround for the semi-finals as they will take on FGCU tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m.
Coach Schunzel on the A-Sun Quarterfinals Win"I really enjoyed watching our team compete tonight. Other than the very end of set three, I feel like we played at a high level. We made really good adjustments and we played to win, which is key in a tournament. We'll have to again prepare very well tomorrow mentally and physically for a super talented Gulf Coast team."
