Manuel Castellanos and
Jorge Wilton of the Kennesaw State men's tennis team won the doubles competition at the Georgia Southern Men's Championship Sunday (Oct. 25) afternoon at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Overall, the Owls won over 60 percent of their matches over the weekend.
The duo outdueled teammates
Sam Slade and
Alejandro Valencia –who won three straight matches against Chattanooga, Savannah State and Chattanooga—6-3 in the finals to win the competition. Castellanos and Wilton went a perfect 4-0 in doubles play as Slade and Valencia went 3-1.
Overall, the Owls went 20-11 (.645) in doubles play in the fall with nine different tandems used in competition.
Led by
Eduardo Rincon, Kennesaw State also had plenty of success in singles play.
Valencia, a sophomore who hails from Cali, Colombia, won three straight matches in the singles draw –which was a 32-person draw—against Savannah State and Chattanooga to reach the finals. Valencia dropped a hard-fought match against Lucas Plesky (Chattanooga) in straight sets.
Freshman
Sam Slade, an Alpharetta, Georgia native, also found success in singles play. After dropping his first match in the round of 32, Slade found his groove in the consolation bracket by winning four matches to take the consolation bracket. Slade defeated teammate, and freshman classmate,
Lucas de Torres Curth (6-2, 6-2) in the finals to secure the win.
The Owls will return to action in the spring against Samford in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday, Jan. 22.
