Box Score (XML) | Box Score (PDF) NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After losing a two set lead and trailing early in the fifth set, the Kennesaw State volleyball showed tremendous heart in battling back and handing the Lipscomb Bisons their first Atlantic Sun loss of the season.
The Bisons had all of the momentum going into the final set and used that to take an early 4-1 lead. The Owls got within one at 7-6, but Lipscomb pushed their lead back to three at 11-8 forcing Kennesaw State to use a timeout. Freshman
Sydni Shelton brought the Owls back in the match with three straight kills, and then
Kristi Piedimonte picked up an ace to tie the score at 11. From there, KSU's defense took over led by
Rachel Taylor. She had two block assists with
Kelly Marcinek and a solo block to carry the Owls to the win at 15-12.
In the opening set, Lipscomb took an early 6-1 lead and carried a six-point lead through a large part of the first set at 15-9. From there, Kennesaw State began to chip away scoring four-straight points to bring the set closer. The Owls didn't take their first lead of the set until it was 23-22, but the Bisons responded with two-straight points to earn a set point. Similar to the fifth, KSU used its length and athleticism to spoil the set point with a block and ran off two more points to steal the first 26-24.
Leading by one in the second set, the Owls ran off a 4-0 run to take control going up 13-8. Kennesaw State didn't let up as the team took a lead by as many as seven and cruised to a 25-18 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lipscomb wasn't going to quietly though as the Bisons stormed out to big leads in the third and fourth sets evening the match at two, but couldn't get over the hump as the Owls defense proved to be too strong.
With the win against Lipscomb, Kennesaw State swept the weekend on the road and sits tied for third at 4-3 in the A-Sun Conference.
Next weekend, the second half of A-Sun play starts as the Owls travel to USC Upstate to play Saturday, October 24 at 3 p.m.
Coach Schunzel on First Win in Program History against Lipscomb"This win has been a long, long time coming for KSU volleyball. Not only have our current players put in a ton of time and work, but we've had many alumni go through this program that this win is dedicated to. This was a great college volleyball match against a tremendous program who is very well coached. We played well and blocked a lot of balls in sets one and two. Lipscomb cranked up their offense and dominated sets three and four. The most inspiring thing for me today was for us to get down 2-5 in the fifth set and play lights out the rest of the way. We were aggressive, played with confidence and made some big time plays down the stretch. When you hit .421 in the fifth set like we did today, you know your team is playing to win. I couldn't be prouder of our group to pull out a road win like that. We're not there yet, but this is a big step for us."
- Kennesaw State Head Coach Keith Schunzel Notes- This is the first win in program history over Lipscomb.
- This is the second conference match this season that the Owls have tied a school record with 18 blocks. The other match was against USC Upstate. Kennesaw State has had double-digit blocks in four of its seven conference matches.
-
Rachel Taylor was one block away from tying the school record with 10 blocks in the match. Three of those blocks came at the end of the fifth set to seal the victory for the Owls. She also added seven kills.
- Taylor wasn't the only one stepping up big on the block as freshman
Liesl Engelbrecht finished with seven blocks. Between Engelbrecht and Taylor, the two have combined for 93 blocks total this season.
-
