KENNESAW, Ga. – Led by a Division I school-record 36 points from junior guard Yonel Brown, the Kennesaw State men's basketball team cruised to a 92-66 victory over Thomas University Saturday (Jan. 3) at the KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw.

Brown led a quartet of Owls players in double figures as he was joined by junior Damien Wilson who had 12, and Orlando Coleman and Bernard Morena who each added 10 for Kennesaw State which improved to 5-11 on the season.

Brown provided the hot hand from the outset as he scored 20 points within the first 10 minutes of the game and had 25 at the intermission before finishing the contest 13 of 20 from the field, including four of seven behind the 3-point arc, and 6-for-6 from the foul line.

"He's (Yonel) the point guard, he's the leader of this team, he has the ball in his hands a lot and I thought he made a lot of great decisions, obviously with 36 points," head coach #Jimmy Lallathin said. "He's a kid that works really hard off the floor and its beginning to show .I'm very happy for him, very proud of him. He continues to get better and better. You look at his three-year career here and he continues to grow. He's the player we recruited."

The Owls' junior floor leader eclipsed the previous Division I record of 32 points that he shared with current teammate Delbert Love. Brown earlier this season equaled Love's mark in a 77-69 victory over Chattanooga on Nov. 29.

Brown's first-half performance helped Kennesaw State to a season-high 52 points at the break as the Owls shot 59.4 percent (19-for-32) from the field while building a 52-31 halftime lead. KSU finished the contest with its second-best shooting performance of the year at it went 36-for-64 (56.3 percent) from the field.

Kennesaw State also received another solid performance from Wilson, who registered his third straight double-digit scoring game, and his 12 points marked a career-high as a member of the Owls.

"I think, offensively, we didn't settle for as much. We got to the rim a little more. That was our emphasis this week," Lallathin said. "We get Damien and Orlando going with YB doing what he can do with his ability to create, get healthy inside, it's going to be a fun team to watch."

KSU turned in a solid outing from 3-point range as it shot a season-best 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from behind the arc. The Owls also had a strong inside game as they outscored the Night Hawks (11-1) 49-30 in the paint and had a 40-23 rebounding advantage.

Kennesaw State opens Atlantic Sun Conference play on Saturday (Jan. 10) when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate at the G.B. Hodge Center beginning at 2 p.m. (ET).

"They're (USC Upstate) probably playing the best in the league right now. They've gone into a couple BCS-level schools and gotten wins," Lallathin said. "We have a big-time challenge starting on the road and then going to face a tough Northern Kentucky team on the road."
