MTN: KSU Defeats Georgia Southern in Season Opener

The Owls Win Battle over Georgia Southern

KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State men's tennis team defeated Georgia Southern, 5-2, in an in-state battle Saturday at the Wallis Tennis Center in Statesboro, Ga.
 
"I am very pleased with the way we competed under tough conditions today," said head coach Eduardo Rincon. "Georgia Southern has a good program and we are fortunate to get the win."
 
The Owls (1-0) won the doubles point with victories from Jake Bouchillon and Manuel Castellanos over Nico  De Groof and Ristomatti Lanne at No. 2, while the No. 3 duo consisting of Simon Pritchard and Alejandro Valencia, clinched doubles play with a win over Christian Kerrigan and Albert Codina Sala.
 
Georgia Southern's No.1 doubles team posted a victory with Jose Landin and Kyle Hoffman defeating Drew Wendel and David Durham 6-2.
 
Kennesaw State continued on a winning streak at No. 1 and No. 2, with Pritchard defeating Lanne 6-4, 6-3 and No. 2 Valencia beating Hoffman 6-2, 6-4.
 
The Eagles rallied back with consecutive wins at No. 3 and No. 4.
 
The Owls recovered, however, by finalizing the match at No. 5 and No. 6 with Bouchillon and Wendel posting victories, respectively. Bouchillon fell to Landin 4-6 in the first set, but won the second and third sets 6-4, 10-6; while Wendel topped De Groof 6-2, 6-1, to give KSU their first win of the season.
 
"It is very important to come home with a positive result," added Rincon. "We won a very competitive match on the road and we are looking forward to a great week of practice to prepare for our next match."
 
Kennesaw State's next match will be against Presbyterian on Sunday Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. ET. The match will take place at Kennworth Park in Acworth, Ga.
