Marit Sandtroeen headed in her first-career goal for the game-winner in the Owls' first match of the Blue Raider Classic at the Hayes Soccer Stadium.
"We generated a lot of chances," said head coach
Rob King. "On another day that could have been three, four, five nothing that game, but when you do not put them away a team hangs around. So I was delighted that Marit stepped up and got the header there. We settled down after that and generated a few more chances. We did not really give much up at the back and it was very tight. I was pleased with the performance. Chatting with the girls afterwards, they were a little bit down because they thought they should have put that team away earlier, but we are growing, we are developing with each game and it's a win. We will tweak a few things tomorrow and look forward to playing a very good South Florida team on Sunday."
Following a scoreless half that saw the Owls outshoot the Governors 12-0, KSU continued its pressure against the Austin Peay backline in the second half.
Sandtroeen then broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute as senior
Julia Nelson sent in a cross from the left side of the field. Floating at the six-yard box, the Tynset, Norway native headed the ball back into the left corner for the 1-0 Owl lead.
Late in the match the Governors made a push for an equalizer, but sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant came up big to secure the 1-0 Owls victory.
KSU registered a season-high 22 shots in the win, with seven coming on frame. Sophomore
Maggie Gaughan led the attack with four shots, including three on goal, while redshirt-sophomores
Danielle Gray and
Brittney Reed also fired four shots in the match.
Sturdivant collected two saves in recording her first clean sheet of the season.
APSU finished the contest with five shots, with only two coming on goal. Nikki Filippone and Lindsey Todd split time in goal for the Governors and got six saves from the pair.
KSU continues the Blue Raider Classic on Sunday (Sept. 7) as the Owls face South Florida at 2 p.m. ET.
