NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Lipscomb in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener on a clear and cool Saturday night (Sept. 27) at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Â
It was just the second time in program history that the Owls (3-7-1, 0-1-0) fell to the Bisons (7-4-1, 1-0-0) after winning nine of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
Â
"We are obviously disappointed with the loss," said head coach
Rob King. "We played well in the first half, created several chances and controlled much of the game. Second half we gave an early goal away and went chasing the game to get back in it and made a couple of mistakes. We want to make sure we learn from these mistakes and be ready to go on Friday."
Â
Following a scoreless first half of play, Lipscomb put in the game's first goal when Jade Abarca picked up a loose ball in the KSU penalty box, took a dribble and finished into the bottom right corner in the 51st minute of the match.
Â
The Bisons added a second score with just over 20 minutes remaining as the Owls pushed forward for the equalizer with Baylee Linnell finishing a shot after a Lipscomb free kick in the KSU defensive third. With just eight minutes left in the match, Caroyln Springsteen made it 3-0 on a Carolina Chadwell corner kick in the 81st minute.
Â
The Owls totaled 11 shots in the match, but only posted two shots on frame as senior
Alma Gardarsdottir and redshirt-sophomore
Brittney Reed led KSU with a pair of shots each.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant collected three saves in the setback, while Lipscomb's Anna Buhigas registered a pair of saves as the Bisons posted 13 shots and were led offensively by Abarca and Paige Miller with three shots each.
Â
Kennesaw State next returns home to Fifth Third Bank Stadium as the Owls continue A-Sun play with a 7 p.m. ET match against Stetson on Friday, Oct. 3, followed by a 1 p.m. match against 2013 A-Sun regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Oct. 5.
